| Bio: | I'm Adam Cartwright I was born in 1830, the first son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Cartwright. I was born in Boston, where my parents had a ship supply store. Pa had been a sailor and had worked for Ma's father as his first mate. Pa decided to open the store when they were married and when Ma's father was forced to retire from the sea. Business was good and soon Ma was pregnant with their first child. Unfortunately, she was not terribly strong and died shortly after giving birth to me, but not before naming me. Pa could no longer stand to live in the east without Ma, so he sold the store and decided to follow a life long dream of heading west. He employed a nanny to travel with us while I was a baby and we set off towards California. I was a serious, quiet boy, who depended greatly on my father in my first few years. We only had each other and traveling west proved to be a dangerous and desperate life on occasion. I had to learn to be very responsible and independent at an early age, as Pa would often have to leave me, to work at odd jobs when money ran low. When I was 5, I became quite ill. We ended up resting in a town where Pa met his second wife, Inger. I quickly became attached to her and accepted her as my mother. Life became happier, as the three of us continued west. While on the trail, Inger became pregnant, but insisted on traveling through the winter to reach our destination. I took it to heart to look after her. Although still very young, this ingrained a sense of responsibility and protectiveness in me. This has carried through to my adult life, and to how I looks out for my family and the ranch now. Again, tragedy fell, as Inger was accidentally shot by Indians at Ash Hollow, but not before Hoss was born. I took charge of my new brother, such a daunting task for a young boy of six. Pa, me and Hoss (Eric), eventually reached our goal of Nevada and began to build the Ponderosa. Pa again married, and later Little Joe came along, but by that stage I was a young man. The age gap of twelve years made me very protective of my baby brother. This is now a cause of conflict between us as I have difficulty coming to terms with Joe wanting to make his own decisions. I was always the brightest and most diligent student in the class through my school years, and showed great promise academically. I worked very hard at school and also on the ranch. This meant that I did not have a lot of friends my own age, being more at ease in the company of adults. I put in the most toil of the three boys in building the Ponderosa. When I was old enough, Pa felt it important that he allow me an opportunity to go to college and study my love of architecture, literature and music. At seventeen, I went back east and studied for three years, leaving my family behind. This gave me an independent attitude and a different perspective on life than that of my brothers, who stayed in the west. I seriously considered going out on my own after college was over, but due to my close relationship with my family, decided to return to the Ponderosa to continue to build the ranch. I still occasionally wonders what it might be like to branch out on my own one day. I work closely with Pa on all aspects of running the Ponderosa. I am often the one chosen for the responsible jobs of negotiating cattle prices, dealing with the financial transactions and overseeing the work being done. I am happy to do this, but it also serves to isolate me a little from my younger brothers. They are much more care free and more likely to get into trouble than me. I often find myself rescuing Little Joe and or Hoss from sticky situations. On the rare occasion though, I find myself being talked into doing something foolish by the two of them, much to my own annoyance. They usually play on my sense of duty and loyalty to suck me into their schemes, and even though I get annoyed, it is my fondness for them that makes me give into their wishes. I would never admit, however, to being soft at heart. I am passionate about my music and books and will spend many hours devoted to both pursuits. I rarely lose at checkers or chess and will be the one to come up with an idea to outsmart rustlers or outlaws on the run. I am strong and handsome, with a dark and brooding nature. I have a tremendous sense of right and wrong. Like my father, I can't stand injustice or prejudice and often go out of my way to help the underdog. I am known as the most eligible bachelor of the Cartwright clan, but because of my more dangerous and aloof nature, I do not attract a string of girlfriends. Women tend to admire me from a distance, not really comfortable to flirt. Although always the perfect gentleman, I rarely let down my guard with them, and do not often let them into my confidence. It would take a very special woman to really become part of my life. Once I find her though, I will be an intensely devoted and loving man. I am well liked among the locals in Virginia City. They see me as the second in charge of the Ponderosa empire and will take my authority when Pa is absent. On occasion, I will enjoy a good laugh and fist fight with my brothers, but the general rule is always reason first. | |||||
